What is DNA? - DNA is an abbreviation for Deoxyribonucleic acid.
- It is present in every cell in the body except red blood cells.

Biological samples such as saliva, urine and perspiration can also be analyzed, provided they contain cells with sufficient DNA: It is important to note that environmental factors such as heat, sunlight, moisture, bacteria and mould can degrade DNA. Therefore not all DNA evidence will result in useable DNA profiles.

- Y-Chromosome analysis - specifically useful for the identification of male individuals and paternal lineage.
- Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis – useful for cases involving highly degraded samples such as bone and hair. As mtDNA is maternally inherited, it is useful in maternal-lineage testing.
