Serology / DNA
DNA Profiling Kimia Malaysia
  • Offers forensic DNA profiling testing services in Malaysia to both government agencies and the public.
  • The country’s only independent, ASCLD/LAB-accredited forensic DNA analysis laboratory.
  • Applies strict quality assurance standards and maintains a strict chain of custody.
What is DNA?
  • DNA is an abbreviation for Deoxyribonucleic acid.
  • It is present in every cell in the body except red blood cells.
  • DNA is a fundamental building block for an individual’s entire genetic
make-up where half of the genetic, maternally is inherited from
the biological mother and another half from the biological father.
  • Everyone’s DNA is unique except for identical twins

Samples Suitable for DNA Testing:

Biological samples suitable for DNA testing include:
  • Blood and bloodstains
  • Bones and organs.
  • Hair
  • Cigarette butts
  • Tissues
  • Buccal swabs
  • Semen and seminal stains

Biological samples such as saliva, urine and perspiration can also be analyzed, provided they contain cells with sufficient DNA:

It is important to note that environmental factors such as heat, sunlight, moisture, bacteria and mould can degrade DNA. Therefore not all DNA evidence will result in useable DNA profiles.

The Role of DNA Profiling

DNA profiling has become one of the most frequently used methods to solve crimes including:
  • Murder
  • Rape/ Sexual assault
  • Identification of human bodies
  • Abandoned babies
  • Assault
  • Theft, robbery, kidnapping, Extortion , Blackmail, and Drug Trafficking.

It also has been applied in parentage and kinship determination and useful in immigration issues

Availability of DNA Profiling Services

Forensic DNA analysis is available at Kimia Malaysia’s Headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Selangor and the Kuching Branch Laboratory in Sarawak Kimia Malaysia’s capabilities in DNA profiling include:
  • Nuclear DNA Testing using the Polymerase Chain Reaction-Short Tandem Repeat (PCR-STR) technique - a technique with a high discriminating power
  • Y-Chromosome analysis - specifically useful for the identification of male individuals and paternal lineage.
  • Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis – useful for cases involving highly degraded samples such as bone and hair. As mtDNA is maternally inherited, it is useful in maternal-lineage testing.
