An advanced training course on Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Operation was held at the Headquarters, Jabatan Kimia Malaysia (JKM) from 27 - 31 July 2015. This 5-day course was organised by the Research & Quality Assurance (RQA) Division.  A total of 36 GCMS users from the headquarters and branch laboratories had participated in the course. The training team was comprised of 3 GC-MS specialists from Agilent Technologies: Mr. Quek Hong Keat, Ms. Gwen Sin Yee, Ms. Goo Choi Nyuk and 2 JKM officers, En. Azharuddin bin Abd Aziz and Pn. Noor Azimah binti Sulaiman.

The opening ceremony on the first day was led off by a welcome speech from the Technical System Management (TSM) Section Head, Pn. Zaiton Ariffin. The objective of this course was to equip the participants with more advanced knowledge and skills in handling the GCMS instrument to cater for the ever challenging needs in chemistry.  By actively taking part in this course, the participants were expected to gear up the analytical performance in the determination of trace levels contaminants, drug residues and harmful toxins in biological, food, water and environmental samples.

The course covered five significant theoretical aspects, application, method development, optimization, maintenance and troubleshooting of GCMS.  It also involved hands-on sessions to enable better understanding. The participants were divided into 4 groups to ensure active participation and help them to gain a better understanding on its application in various fields of analysis, which included analysis of pesticide residues in food, analysis of toxin residues in biological samples, analysis of narcotic samples and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in recovered oil samples. Upon completion of the course, all participants were able to enhance their existing techniques/skills in the preparation of standards, GCMS method setup (both Scan and SIM modes), qualitative and quantitative analysis as well as data interpretation. The course was exam oriented, and thus all participants were pre and post tested by the organiser on subjects related to GCMS in order to identify gaps and guarantee an optimum outcome.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Tuan Haji Ismail bin Talib, Director-General JKM who presented certificates to all the participants, as a token of appreciation for their full commitment to making this course a success. He also urged all the participants to use the newly acquired knowledge and skills to maximize the GCMS capacity as well as their own capabilities to yield the highest performance in their routine tasks. Besides, proper troubleshooting techniques were highlighted as the DG envisioned an excellent laboratory not only to have good GCMS analytical skills, but also problem solving skills in their respective areas
