Community projects themed "Chemistry to School" was held successfully and received overwhelming response from teachers and students in three schools of rural areas in the districts of Besut, Kemaman and Dungun. This community projects with the concept of "Chemistry are everywhere and we are part of you" was began with the awareness talks on food safety, drugs usage , environmental awareness and the effects of drug abuse. Teachers and students later presented by exhibitions and interactive show based on the chemistry of life. Community program was started at Sek.Men. Bukit Payong, Besut on April 17th 2012 with the participation of more than 1200 students and teachers.The following community program was held at Sek. Men. Felda Neram, Kemaman on April 24th with the participation of nearly 450 students and teachers. Meanwhile in Sek. Men. Jerangau, Dungun more than 300 students and their teachers had participated in community program which was held on April 25th 2012. Generally, this year community projects were managed to attract students on analytical work carried out by the Department of Chemistry besides providing awareness on food safety, drug usage and effects of drug abuse. On request from schools administrative, this community project had also provided inspection services on fume hood for the school laboratory. Finally, the Department of Chemistry, Terengganu Branch express the most appreciation to the school principals and teachers for their cooperation and support given to make this community project successfully event. |

On 26th April 2012, the Environmental Health Division, Department of Chemistry (DOC), Malaysia held an Environment and Water Exhibition at a high performance school, Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) School, Precint 1, Putrajaya. The exhibition was held in conjunction with their Science and Mathematics Carnival Week 2012 with the theme ' Future Innovations Begins'. The exhibition began as early as 8 am and ended at 1 pm, at the Putra Perdana Hall, SAS School.
Approximately 1000 visitors comprising of Form 1 to 5 SAS School students, primary and secondary school students from Putrajaya and Cyberjaya, teachers and supporting staff attended the exhibition. Among the displayed materials and activities carried out were:• Display of the Environment and Water Section posters, • Demonstration of Handheld XRF, • pH test for a variety of common household items, • Ammonia test using a photometer, • Environment Crossword puzzle, and •Mobile laboratory exhibition (GC-MS and photometer demonstration).
The Carnival Closing Ceremony was officiated by Major. Dr. Faiz Khaleed, National Astronaut, accompanied by the Principal of the school, En.Ahmad Rosidi bin Ramley, who had also visited the DOC exhibition.
Other participating agencies in the exhibition were the Faculty of Science and Technology, UKM and Malaysian Meteorological Department. Also held on that day was a Scientific Research and Innovation competition for the SAS School.The exhibition by DOC had succeeded in opening the eyes and minds of the visitors to the ability and expertise of the department in the field of scientific analysis. They were actively involved in the quizzes and interactive activities provided. |
