Scientific Article Writing Course
A scientific article writing course was held at the Headquarters, Jabatan Kimia Malaysia (JKM) on 4 April 2014 and participated by 101 officers from respective headquarters laboratories. This course was organised by the Research and Quality Assurance (RQA) Division in collaboration with members of the American Chemical Society (ACS) as part of Building Opportunity out of Science and Technology (BOOST) program under their international activities. Presentations were delivered by three certified ACS trainers.
This course aims to provide experts’ tips and expose participants to the development of skills for effective scientific writing, publishing journals and communicating science with the goal of creating more writers amongst the participants as well as assisting them in providing articles of higher quality.
The course was officiated by Y.Brs. Mr. Chang Hon Fong, Deputy Director General (Operational) who encouraged all JKM scientific officers to write and publish their technical and research works in local or international publications. He is concerned with the low number of publications and suggested for it to be included as one of the key performance index of each officer. He stressed that reading is fundamental in simulating mind to writing. In addition, he also emphasized the importance of developing effective interpretation skills in the use of the vast data available in the organization for publishing purposes. Meanwhile, he took the opportunity to persuade the participants to commence their involvement by publishing their papers in local journals such as Malaysian Journal of Chemistry (MJChem) published by Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) and other local universities’ journals.
The three certified ACS trainers in this course were Dr. Raja Subramaniam from Jabatan Kimia Malaysia who delivered a presentation on “Publishing Research” where he shared his valuable experiences and tips in poster and oral presentations as well as effective techniques in preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-review journals; Dr. Lee Hooi Ling, senior lecturer from Universiti Sains Malaysia who delivered a presentation entitled “Proposal Development: Selling Research Ideas” where she pointed out some effective practices in grant proposals for increase chances of securing funding; and Dr. Lim Gin Keat, senior lecturer from Universiti Sains Malaysia who delivered a presentation on “Commutating Science to the Public” where he stressed on the importance of soft skills to scientists for the effective communication and presentation in promoting their research works to the public.
The closing ceremony was officiated by Y.Brs. Mr. Ng Hock Sing, Director of Research and Quality Assurance (RQA) who presented certificates and souvenirs to the speakers as a token of appreciation for their valuable collaboration in making the training course a success. He advised participants to apply the knowledge learned in contributing to scientific writing and presentation with aids of facilities and resources available in the organization.

Department of Chemistry Melaka at Carnival Education, Career and Innovation Melaka 2014
Melaka : The Melaka Education Department with the cooperation of the Melaka State Government and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) held the annual Carnival Education, Career and Innovation from 3 to 6 April 2014 at Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, Melaka. The event was officially declared open by The Most Honourable Y.A.B. Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Ir. Idris Bin Haron on 3 April 2014. Also present on the occasion was the Deputy Minister of MOSTI, the Honourable Y.B. Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar Bin Mohamad Diah.
In conjunction with this Carnival, MOSTI had its Launching Ceremony for R & D Products of MOSTI, as an initiative to the MOSTI Commercialisation Year 2014 (MCY2014) on 4 April 2014. The launching ceremony was accomplished by the Honourable Y.B. Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar bin Mohamad Diah, the Deputy Minister of MOSTI. Y.Bhg. Dato' Dr. Mohd. Azhar Bin Hj Yahaya, the Deputy Secretary General (Policy) of MOSTI, together with many senior officers of MOSTI and agencies under it were also present. The Department of Chemistry, Malaysia was represented by its Director General Tuan Ahmad Ridzuan Bin Ibrahim and Mr. Lim Kieng Chwee, Director of its Melaka Branch.
Department of Chemistry Melaka Branch represented the Department by participating in an exhibition at the MOSTI Pavilion. Posters and exhibits related to all its field of services on display attracted much public attention. The Department also put up a Career Guidance Corner displaying qualification for the various categories of job in the Department, as well as procedure in applying for Industrial Training Internship Programme. During his visit to our booth, the Most Honourable Y.A.B. Chief Minister of Melaka uttered his appreciation to the contribution of Department of Chemistry, Melaka in the recent survey study of new water sources in Melaka.

Exhibition at MET Malaysia Melaka
On 23 March 2014, Meteorology Department of Malaysia (MET Malaysia) had its Official Opening Ceremony for its Melaka branch office at Taman Merdeka, Batu Berendam, Melaka, in conjunction with World Meteorology Day 2014 with the theme “Climate and Weather : Youth participation”.
Department of Chemistry Malaysia, Melaka Branch was invited to participate in an exhibition held on this occasion. As a show of support to its fellow agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), we obliged with the invitation. The focus for our exhibition this time around was on our role in the field of forensic science services. Seven staff from the Department had sacrificed their week-end to take care of the exhibition from 10 am to 4.30 pm.
The Honorable Deputy Minister of MOSTI, Y.B. Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar bin Mohamad Diah, officially declared open the ceremony. In attendance were the Ministry’s Secretary General, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Dr. Rosli bin Mohamed, and many senior officers of the Ministry. The Department of Chemistry was represented by Tuan Hj. Ismail Bin Talib, the Deputy Director General (Policy) and its Melaka branch Director.
Besides the exhibition, several activities at school and open level were held to attract public interest from community in the vicinity, such as Colouring Competition, Drawing Competition and Weather Presenter Competition.The Ceremony concluded with a People’s Feast with the Deputy Minister of MOSTI.
Report on a study tour of medical students from Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UNISZA)
The Department of Chemistry’s Terengganu branch was visited by 4th year medical students and a lecturer, Prof. Dr. G.K. Swethadri from the Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA) on 12th March 2014. The aim of the study tour was to learn and know the correct work procedures for the handling of medicolegal specimens. Apart from this, they also wanted to seek our views and advice on the ways of collecting specimens during post-mortems or in clinical cases.
The students were provided with the correct and relevant information on the management of medicolegal samples which would be a guide to them after finishing their studies and start working.
